How to use AI to PDF
- Press Select AI files.
- Wait a moment – each file is checked and converted.
- Download the PDF (several files come in a ZIP).
How it works
When Illustrator saves an .ai file with “Create PDF Compatible File” switched on – the default setting – it stores a complete PDF copy of the artwork inside. This tool takes that PDF out and saves it as a normal .pdf file. If a file was saved without this option, it can only be opened in Illustrator; ask the designer to save it again with the option on, or to export a PDF.
About the formats
- AI is the Adobe Illustrator file format. By default Illustrator saves a full PDF copy inside every AI file, so it can be opened without Illustrator.
- PDF is the universal document format: it looks the same on every device and printer.
Open Illustrator files without Illustrator
When Illustrator saves an .ai file with “Create PDF Compatible File” switched on (the default), a full PDF copy is stored inside. This tool takes out that copy, so clients, printers and colleagues can view and print the artwork without Adobe software.
Tips
- If you see a message that the file has no PDF copy, ask the designer to save it again with “Create PDF Compatible File” ticked, or export a PDF directly.
- Need a picture for social media? Convert the PDF with PDF to PNG.
