What is PDF/A?
PDF/A is a version of PDF made for keeping documents for many years. Everything needed to show the file – fonts, colours and information – must be inside the file, and things that could change or break, like JavaScript or links to outside files, are not allowed. Many courts, tax offices and archives ask for PDF/A.
What this tool does
- Adds the PDF/A-2b identification and an sRGB colour profile.
- Writes matching document information (title, author, dates).
- Removes JavaScript, automatic actions and attached files.
- Checks whether all fonts are embedded and warns you if not.
If a font is missing, choose Picture pages: every page becomes an image, which always meets the PDF/A-2b rules, and an invisible text layer keeps the words searchable.
Who needs PDF/A?
- Courts, tax offices, universities and government portals that require long-term archiving.
- Companies that must keep invoices and contracts readable for many years.
- Libraries and archives for theses and research papers.
Good to know
- PDF/A embeds the fonts and colour information so the file looks the same in 20 years.
- Encrypted PDFs, JavaScript and audio or video are not allowed in PDF/A – remove passwords first with Unlock PDF.
- If a portal also asks for a small file, compress first and convert to PDF/A afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Which PDF/A version is made?
PDF/A-2b (ISO 19005-2, level B), which is accepted by most archives and e-filing systems.
Why does it warn about fonts?
PDF/A requires every font to be inside the file. Fonts cannot be added afterwards in the browser, so the tool tells you and offers the picture option.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is opened and converted inside your browser on your own phone or computer and is never sent to our server.
