How to get a free Gemini API key

The AI helpers in our AI Story Localizer, AI Summarizer, Mind Map Maker, eBook Maker and Storybook Maker use Google Gemini. The website shares a free allowance between all visitors. With your own free Gemini API key the AI works for you without waiting for that shared allowance – Google gives every key its own free daily allowance. It takes about two minutes and no payment card is needed.

Step by step

1. Open aistudio.google.com/apikey on your phone or computer.
2. Sign in with your Google (Gmail) account.
3. The first time, Google AI Studio shows its terms – tick the box and press Continue.
4. Press Create API key. If Google asks for a project, choose the one it suggests or create a new project – this is free.
5. Your key appears – a long line of letters and numbers. Press the copy button next to it.
6. Come back to the tool on SmartPDFConvert and open 🔑 Connect my own free Gemini key just below the tool.
7. Paste the key into the box and press Save.
8. Press 🧪 Test my key. When it says “Your key works”, every AI button in our tools uses your key.

Good to know

• It is free. The free Gemini plan needs no card. Google limits how much each free key can do per minute and per day; for one person this is usually plenty.
• Your key stays on your device. It is saved only in your browser on this phone or computer. With each AI request it is sent through our server to Google, and it is never saved on our server. Remove it any time with Remove my key.
• One key for every tool. Once saved, all our AI tools on this device use it. On another phone or computer, paste it there too.
• Keep it private. Do not share your key or post it online. If you think someone has it, delete it in Google AI Studio and create a new one.
• Privacy on the free plan. On Google’s free plan, Google may use what you send to improve its products. Do not send highly confidential text.

Problems?

• “This does not look like a Gemini API key” – copy the whole key again from Google AI Studio, without spaces.
• “Your own Gemini key is not valid” – the key was deleted or copied wrongly. Create a new key and save it again.
• “Your own free Gemini key has used today’s allowance” – your key’s free daily allowance is used. It is free again the next day.
