What is pixel size?
Every digital picture is made of tiny squares called pixels. The pixel size – for example 1200 × 800 px – is the number of pixels across and down. Websites, apps and online forms often ask for an exact pixel size, and a photo straight from a phone camera is usually far bigger (4000 × 3000 px or more).
Common pixel sizes
- Instagram post 1080 × 1080 px · story 1080 × 1920 px
- Facebook cover 851 × 315 px · YouTube thumbnail 1280 × 720 px
- Profile pictures 400 × 400 px
- Online form photos often 200 × 230 px – use the Photo & Signature Resizer when the form also sets a KB limit
Pixels, KB and DPI – what is the difference?
Pixels are the picture’s width and height. KB is the file size on disk – to reach a KB limit use Resize Image to KB. DPI only says how big the picture prints on paper; for printing at a set size in cm or inches use Resize Image with the cm or inch option.
Tips
- Making a picture smaller in pixels keeps it sharp. Making it much bigger cannot add detail, so it may look soft.
- To change the shape (for example a tall photo into a square) without stretching, crop the image first.
