When BMP is needed
Some industrial printers, sign and embroidery machines and older Windows software only accept BMP. For anything else, PDF to PNG gives the same quality in smaller files.
About the formats
- PDF is the universal document format: it looks the same on every device and printer.
- BMP is the classic Windows bitmap. It stores pixels without compression, so files are large, but almost every program – including very old software, embroidery machines and some printers – can open it.
When to use BMP
BMP is an old, uncompressed format that almost every program understands. Embroidery and engraving machines, some industrial printers, old Windows software and some school assignments still ask for BMP files.
Tips
- BMP files are large – use PDF to PNG when any modern format is accepted.
- Choose the resolution your machine needs; many embroidery programs work best with 150–300 DPI.
