About the formats
- PDF is the universal document format: it looks the same on every device and printer.
- GIF is a format from 1987 that is still the standard for short looping animations in chats, forums and emails. A GIF can show at most 256 colours per frame, which is why colour smoothing (dithering) matters for photos.
Two kinds of GIF
- One GIF per page – simple pictures for old websites and forums.
- Animated GIF – all pages play one after another like a slideshow, great for showing a brochure or menu in a chat or social post.
Tips
- Set the delay per page (for example 2 seconds) so people can read each page.
- GIF has only 256 colours; photos look smoother with dithering switched on.
- For short videos use Video to GIF.
