How to use Word Translator
- Press Select file and choose your Word document (.docx) – or paste text into the box.
- Choose the language it is in (or “Detect language”) and the language you want.
- Press Translate, check the preview and download your translated Word document.
What is kept in your Word file
Only the words change. Paragraph styles, headings, bullet lists, tables, pictures, page size, margins, headers, footers, footnotes and comments stay exactly where they were. Each paragraph is translated as a whole, so sentences read naturally; when a paragraph mixed bold and normal words, the paragraph keeps the style of its first word.
Tips for the best translation
- Clear, complete sentences translate best. Very short labels can be translated in more than one way.
- Names, numbers, e-mail addresses and links are left as they are.
- For right-to-left languages such as Urdu and Arabic the text direction is set automatically.
- Always let a fluent speaker read important documents before you send or publish them.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no sign-up and no watermark. A fair daily limit applies on phones and non-Chrome browsers; in Google Chrome on a computer you can translate as much as you like.
Which languages are supported?
More than 100 languages, including English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Choose “Detect language” and the original language is found for you.
Can I translate an old .doc file?
Please open it in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx first – then translate the .docx file.
How good is the translation?
It is machine translation – great for understanding a document, sharing a draft or preparing a first version. For contracts, medical papers or a book you will publish, have a fluent speaker check the result before you use it.
Is my document uploaded?
Your file itself is opened and rebuilt on your own device. In Google Chrome on a computer the translation also happens on your device. On other browsers and phones only the words that need translating are sent securely to our translation service and are not kept with your name or file; the finished file is made on your device.
