Web Optimize or Compress?
Compress PDF can turn every page into a picture, which gives the biggest saving for scans but makes the text unselectable. Web Optimize keeps every page as it is and only makes the photos inside lighter, so the file still behaves like the original – text can be searched and copied, links keep working and drawings stay razor-sharp.
Best for
- Brochures, menus and catalogues with many photos
- Reports and e-books you put on a website
- Files you share on WhatsApp or by e-mail
When it does not help
If a PDF has no large photos – for example a plain text document – it is usually already small. In that case your original file is kept and you are told so.
What does web optimisation change?
The file is rewritten so the first page can be shown while the rest is still loading, duplicate data is removed and the internal structure is cleaned up. Readers on a website or phone see the document faster, and the file is often smaller.
Tips
- Ideal for menus, brochures, price lists and catalogues that you put on your website.
- For scans with many photos, Compress PDF saves more space.
- Give the PDF a clear title with Edit PDF Metadata – search engines show it as the result title.
