Where AVIF files come from
Websites, newer Android phones and some cameras save pictures as AVIF to save space. When an app or form says “format not supported”, convert the AVIF to JPG here.
About the formats
- AVIF is a very efficient image format based on the AV1 video codec. Phones and websites use it to save space, but many apps, editors and upload forms still do not accept it.
- JPG (also JPEG or JFIF) is the most common photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is saved.
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a very efficient new image format used by modern phones and websites. Many editors, upload forms and older devices still cannot open it – JPG works everywhere.
Tips
- Convert a whole folder at once and download one ZIP.
- For pictures with transparency choose PNG in Convert Image.
