When to use WebP instead of PNG
For website graphics, banners, product pictures with transparent backgrounds and screenshots in blog posts, WebP gives much smaller files. Keep PNG for files you will edit again or send to people using older software.
About the formats
- PNG is a lossless picture format. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports transparent backgrounds and is ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and text, but photos become larger than JPG.
- WebP is a modern format made by Google. It gives files around 25–35% smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality and supports transparency and animation. Most browsers show it, but some older programs and printers do not open it.
Tips
- WebP keeps transparency, so logos and product cut-outs stay transparent and become much smaller.
- Use lossless WebP for logos and icons, normal WebP for photos.
- WordPress, Shopify and most website builders accept WebP uploads.
