When you need BMP
Some embroidery and sign-making machines, label printers, microcontroller projects, old Windows programs and games only read BMP. For sharing and websites use JPG or PNG instead, because BMP files are much bigger.
About the formats
- BMP is the classic Windows bitmap. It stores pixels without compression, so files are large, but almost every program – including very old software, embroidery machines and some printers – can open it.
Who still needs BMP?
Embroidery and engraving machines, some label printers, old Windows programs and certain school or office systems only accept BMP. Every pixel is stored without compression, so the files are larger but open everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?

Why is the BMP file so large?
BMP stores every pixel without compression. A 12-megapixel photo becomes about 36 MB.
Is my file uploaded?
