How to use your favicon

Upload the file as favicon.ico to the main folder of your website, or add it in your website builder’s settings (WordPress: Appearance › Customize › Site Identity). Square pictures work best; a simple logo or one letter is easiest to recognise at 16 pixels.

About the formats

PNG is a lossless picture format. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports transparent backgrounds and is ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and text, but photos become larger than JPG.
ICO is the Windows icon format. One ICO file can hold several sizes of the same icon (16, 32, 48 … 256 pixels), which is what websites use as their favicon and what Windows uses for shortcuts.

Making a favicon

Start with a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels with a transparent background.
The ICO file contains several sizes (16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256) so it looks sharp in browser tabs, bookmarks and the Windows desktop.
Upload favicon.ico to the main folder of your website, or set it in WordPress under Appearance → Customize → Site Identity.
