When to convert PNG to JPG
Use JPG for photos, product pictures and screenshots that you email, post or upload to a form with a size limit. Keep PNG for logos, icons and pictures with transparent backgrounds or sharp text, because JPG blurs fine edges slightly and cannot be see-through.
About the formats
- PNG is a lossless picture format. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports transparent backgrounds and is ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and text, but photos become larger than JPG.
- JPG (also JPEG or JFIF) is the most common photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is saved.
Why convert PNG to JPG?
- PNG photos and screenshots can be 5–10 times larger than JPG.
- Many upload forms accept only JPG.
Tips
- Transparent areas need a colour in JPG – choose white or any background colour.
- Keep PNG for logos and text graphics that must stay crisp.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Will the quality drop?
At “Best” or “High” quality the difference is very hard to see in photos. Sharp text and flat colours can show slight blur – keep PNG for those.
What happens to transparent parts?
They are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is opened and converted inside your browser on your own phone or computer and is never sent to our server.
