Good to know
Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back detail that JPEG compression already removed, and it does not make the background transparent by itself – use Remove Background for that. The PNG will usually be larger than the JPG because it is lossless.
About the formats
- JPG (also JPEG or JFIF) is the most common photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is saved.
- PNG is a lossless picture format. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports transparent backgrounds and is ideal for logos, screenshots, icons and text, but photos become larger than JPG.
When is PNG better?
- Pictures you will edit many times – PNG does not lose quality on each save.
- Screenshots and graphics with text.
- As a first step before removing the background – then use Remove Background for a transparent PNG.
Note: converting does not make a JPG sharper; the PNG will usually be larger.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes – free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, so photos take more space. That is normal and gives the best quality for editing.
Can I make the background transparent?
Yes – use our Remove Background tool after converting, or before.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is opened and converted inside your browser on your own phone or computer and is never sent to our server.
